The 7th Professional Lighting Design Convention, PLDC 2018, was held back in October in Singapore. The event marked another highlight in the history of  PLDC events: its been the first PLDC outside of Europe.

This annual Convention was created for the global lighting design market. Lighting designers, architects, researchers, universities, industry and clients use PLDC as a platform to meet, learn about the latest developments in lighting design, and discuss the future of the lighting profession. PLDC stands for high-quality knowledge transfer and international networking opportunities.

PLDC 2018 Singapore – A Smart Move

The 7th Professional Lighting Design Convention, PLDC 2018, will be held in Singapore from October 25 – 27, 2018. The convention includes a two-day conference with Keynote Speakers, presented papers, self-running poster presentations, a manufacturers’ exhibition, social and cultural evening events, organised moderated discussions, Experience Rooms, excursions, and a Gala Dinner.

PLDC 2018 Warm-Up Events

Pre-convention meetings are held prior to the conference, and are dedicated to the further pursuit of the recognition of the profession and include sessions for educators and researchers, as well as discussion and debate on professional issues.

Lights in Alingsas 2016: Northern Europe´s largest Lighting Workshop in the Public Space

The Lights in Alingsas 2016 event consist of five weeks of outdoor lighting settings. Since its start in the year 2000, every October leading lighting designers are invited to Alingsås to transform evening outdoor environments into fascinating and exciting lighting art installations.

During the years Lights in Alingsås has so turned into the largest lighting event in public spaces in Northern Europe. Its concept has made it a crucial meeting point for lighting designers, students and other people from the lighting profession.

The event is an incredible experience for the visitors, that can have the opportunity to live top quality examples of architectural lighting surrounded by other activities such as concerts, exhibitions and events related to light.

Lights in Alingsas 2016: An Amazing Place for Meetings

Here, friends meet to hang out and to take a walk while visiting the lighting installations, companies take the opportunity to arrange conferences and the lighting designer and other people in the industry get together. Every year, Lights in Alingsås attracts 85,000 visitors. The theme of the Lights in Alingsås festival 2016, is “The Enlightenment”

PLDC 2017 Conference Venue and Format Confirmed

Palais des Congrès de Paris is a leading venue for conferences, trade shows and corporate events. Architecture, innovation, international fame, a strategic location with easy access and a large hotel capacity all comes together at this venue. It has the advantages of one of the world’s largest convention centres, therefore its a perfect fit for the PLDC 2017 Conference.

The venue, which comprises approximately 32,000m² of floor space, was built by French architect Guillaume Gillet and inaugurated in 1974. Past events at the Palais des Congrès de Paris include the César Awards, the Eurovision Song Contest 1978, and the presentation of the Tour de France.

The PLDC 2017 conference, exhibition and other activities will take place on level 2 of the building. Hall Maillot will offer around 5,000 m² for the sponsors’ exhibition, partners’ area, activity and interaction areas, the PLD community lounge, the registration desk and the VIA stand. One of the conference rooms is also located in this area. Two corridors, plus another conference room, lead to the largest conference room on the floor, the Amphithéatre Bleu, in which all Keynote speeches and one conference track will take place. The building is located at the far end of the Champs-Élysées, near the Périphérique, and can be accessed via the main traffic routes.

PLDC 2017 Conference Format Modernised

For the PLDC Paris edition, the organisers are proud to announce that the conference format has been modernised in accordance with feedback provided by an international Think Tank and other partners. PLDC remains a four-track conference, but the structure has been amended slightly so that the audience will only have to select between three papers at the same time, instead of four. The Research track has been split into two and will feature 20-minute papers on research findings from independent researchers and designers plus cutting-edge R&D input.

The Call for Papers for the event will be released by 1. September, 2016.

PLDC 2017 Warm-Up Events: Network – Compromise – Learn!

First PLDC 2017 Warm-Up Events are Scheduled

The first PLDC 2017 Warm-Up events are scheduled. The warm-up meetings will kick-off in Paris, France on 7. July, 2016 at the same place where it all comes together in 2017. National and international guests are invited to attend this networking evening event, to meet long-term lighting partners and friends from the lighting profession and to make new contacts.

Enthusiast and Skilled Hosts and Speakers

The event will be in close collaboration with PLDC partner ACE, the French lighting designers’ association. ACE will be hosting the warm-up together with iGuzzini. As an indication of the quality that PLDC conference papers offer the evening will include a keynote presentation given by an enthusiastic international lighting designer and former PLDC speaker (name to be announced shortly).

Light Middle East: Warm-Up by PLD-i Seminar

On the occasion of Light Middle East 2016 a PLDC 2017 warm-up will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates the form of a PLD-i seminar (31. October, 2016). By the way, the abbreviation ‘PLD-i’ stands for ‘Professional Lighting Design interactive’ and is a further step towards continuing professional development in the lighting design world. The seminar is an intensive interactive course, designed for lighting professionals and taught by professionals – knowledge transfer in its purest sense!

“Shift Happens” – The City of Paris is getting prepared for PLDC 2017

The motto of the PLDC 2017 will be “Shift happens!” – pointing to the dramatic changes on the lighting design landscape, the impact of digital technologies and the processes the design community will have to undergo to adjust to changing conditions. Substantial changes are anticipated in the public realm with regard to structural reorganisation. Lighting programmes in towns and cities in future will be addressing issues such as atmosphere and energy savings to the same extent.

‘City of Light’ to Host PLDC 2017

After a succesfull PLDC 2015 in Rome, Italy, the City of Paris will be the location of the next PLDC event. The French capital looks forward to playing a significant role in support of PLDC 2017, and the PLDC organisers will be cooperating with key persons in Paris to take the event to a new level. Paris was one of the first cities to start using street lights during the Great Exhibition of 1889, and was promptly referred to as the City of Light. The city fathers now have the chance to regain the title in the modern sense as the “City of Light 4.0”. By the year 2020, Paris is planning to change its public lighting system radically.

PLDC: Driver of State-of-the-Art Lighting Design

In 2017, PLDC will therefore again serve as a driver of state-of-the-art lighting design, a platform to enable trends to be discussed and developed – taking the next step to strengthen the interdisciplinary character of the educational event. Exact dates and venue to be defined.

PLDC 2017 – Kick-Off

The Light+Building 2016 fair in Frankfurt back in March  marked the official kick-off to the new PLDC season. Initial information on the event and the core topics and targets are available, and the first partners have confirmed their support for the 2017 event. These benefit immediately from presence and visibility during ongoing activities in the coming 18 months, which will be rich in educational content and feature social activities and events for the Professional Lighting Design community.

Lights in Goa 2015

“LIGHTS IN GOA 2015: Spread the word on good Architectural Lighting Design Practices and keep the industry abreast with the latest design trends and technologies”

The first edition saw a three-day seminar with six international design professionals and educators, which was widely attended by participants from 13 countries. The second edition in 2011 was a full scale five-day PLDA workshop, with six sites, designed and installed, followed by seminars by leading design professionals on the last day.

The third edition held in January 2014 was a two day seminar, addressing various design aspects, with a view to engage the decision makers as a draft master plan for the same is being designed, and it was our endeavour to educate and motivate the decision makers to having the first ever Architectural Lighting Masterplan in India, for Panaji, Goa.

Practices in Lighting Design

Lights in Goa has now shifted venue to Bengaluru the Garden City, to take the educational initiative of good practices for the Lighting Designer, to a larger receptive audience that a metro city could deliver. The up scaling of this event seems necessary given that the industry could only gain from a larger audience adept at taking correct decisions concerning lighting design.

All submissions will be blind-reviewed by an independent jury of experts from the lighting business. The convention will also include invited Keynote Speakers, a sponsoring partners’ meeting area, pre-convention meetings, social events, self-running electronic poster presentations and a Gala Dinner during which the Professional Lighting Design Recognition Awards will be given for outstanding achievements in Architectural Lighting Design.

PLDC: Education in Lighting Design and Cutting Edge Technologies

PLDC offers further and continuing education in the field of lighting design and the presentation of cutting-edge technologies. PLDC 2015 will comprise the next chapter in a history of successful conventions. The convention offers a communication platform for established lighting designers, researchers, students, manufacturers, city planners, architects and related professions to network, exchange and share knowledge and new approaches in the field of light and lighting.

The PLDC 2015 ‘Experience Room’ will be a continuation and further development of the lighting research on skin tones and cosmetics cased in retail environments.

PLDC 2015 “An educated decision”

This year’s motto is a clear announcement and appeal for more education in the field of architectural lighting design. On the one hand, lighting design is an independent profession and the scope of work and value of working with a lighting designer needs to be communicated to related professions, clients and end-users. On the other hand, new technologies and the scope they offer, as well as the latest research findings, also demonstrate the need for more education on the part of the lighting designer him-/herself to ensure all clients’ needs and forthcoming standards can be met.

PLDC 2015 will address education on both levels, taking the lighting design community’s efforts a step further and contributing towards all involved being able to make an educated decision in future!
